Electrical drivetrain packages

For today’s utility scale wind turbines there are two main electrical drivetrain concepts, doubly-fed and full converter. The primary difference in these concepts is the type and size of generator used and the function of the converter. The full converter concepts can be further categorized into three types, low-speed (also known as direct-drive), medium-speed, and high-speed. ABB produces products for all of these concepts.

Doubly-fed electrical drivetrain package

ABB’s offering for the doubly-fed concept includes slip-ring generators and converters, for both onshore and offshore wind turbines. The main circuit breaker and contactors complete the ABB rivetrain offering. This package provides a proven solution for turbine manufacturers.

High-speed full converter electrical drivetrain packages

ABB’s offering for high-speed full converter concepts includes permanent magnet and asynchronous generators and full power converters. The generators and converters are suitable for onshore or offshore turbines. Generator stator contactors and main circuit breakers complete the ABB drivetrain offering.

Medium-speed full converter electrical drivetrain package

ABB’s offering for medium-speed full converter concepts includes permanent magnet generators and full power converters. The generators and converters are suitable for onshore or offshore turbines. Generator stator contactors and main circuit breakers complete the ABB drivetrain offering.

Low-speed full converter electrical drivetrain package
