ABB’s paper on generator protection was recognized for award at PCIC Middle East 2017

2017-05-09 - ABB’s paper on the benefits of an integrated protection and control system for MV/LV generators was voted third best at the 5th annual Petroleum and Chemical Industry Conference (PCIC) Middle East 2017 in Abu Dhabi. PCIC Middle East has, during its four years of existence, grown to become the leading forum for exchanging experience of practical application of electrical and control technology in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf region.

The last two years have been challenging for the oil and gas and petrochemical industry, forcing all key players to re-evaluate their business, not to mention face the impact of digitalization on a highly conservative industry at the same time. PCIC plays an important part in combating these challenges, by bringing together manufacturers, contractors, engineering companies and end customers. The conference offers delegates an excellent opportunity to share and discuss experiences, best practices and innovations, as well as network with peers from around the world.

"PCIC is one of the very few noncommercial, global occasions where suppliers and end customers within the industry can openly share technological papers for the sole purpose of learning from one another's technological innovations and, more importantly, practical experience," said Bert Engbers, Sales Manager within ABB's Oil, Gas and Chemicals business unit (IAOG) and member of PCIC’s General Board and Technical Committee.

The main topics of the PCIC Middle East 2017 conference were equipment, systems and components, asset integrity and availability, good design practice, as well as personal safety. ABB presented two papers at the conference, one of which was a joint effort between the Distribution Automation unit in Finland and India and the end customer, SHELL, entitled "Benefits of integrated protection and control system for MV/LV generators for reliable operation in the petroleum & chemical industry". The paper - authored by Prashant Ganoo, Olli Rintamäki and Arinjai Gupta from ABB, together with Sharad K. Dwivedi from SHELL, Netherlands – hit the mark and was voted third best.

"I am proud that Distribution Automation, and our business unit as a whole, continuously invest time and effort in contributing to this annual key event for the electrical discipline in the oil, gas and chemical industry," said Thomas Schmidtchen, global segment manager for Oil and Gas within the Medium Voltage Products business unit. "This rating is proof that the investments are paying off – let’s keep up the good work."

The awarded paper discussed ABB's protection redundancy approach for optimal overall availability and reliability, explained how frequency adaptiveness ensures that gas turbine generators remain protected also during start-up, and introduced a supervised auto-synchronizing system for generator protection. The presentation showed how all these technological advancements are embodied in ABB's latest developments within distribution protection and control – particularly in the newcomer, generator protection REG615.

"Our regular presence at the PCIC conferences, presenting white papers, participating in ABB’s preconference events for selected end customers, and hosting the hospitality suites, gives Distribution Automation an excellent opportunity to meet end customers, engineering companies, EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) companies and other stakeholders. We learn about industry challenges, customer experiences and requirements, enabling us to promote and develop our offering," said Prashant Ganoo, Product Line Manager at the Distribution Automation unit.

Thomas Schmidtchen says the Middle East is by tradition a high-demand region for ABB's offering to the oil and gas industry. He also sees the Middle East as one of the major growth regions within petrochemicals and chemicals.

"ABB’s and BU Medium Voltage Products' presence in the Middle East is vital for achieving our 2020 strategy goals. Participating actively in PCIC Middle East will definitely help us reach these targets," concluded Schmidtchen.

The Distribution Automation unit will also be presenting at the next PCIC conference, PCIC Europe 2017 in Vienna on May 16-18, 2017.
